BARAMEI
Baramei (ដារមី) is a Khmer concept referring to spiritual power, divine merit, and a blessed presence that is built over time through intention, virtue, and right action.
It comes from the belief that what you do accumulates, shaping a presence that can be felt, not just seen. It shows in how someone moves, how they respond, and how others feel in their presence.
The word is often used when speaking about ancestors, monks, sacred places, and beings that carry protection, wisdom, and spiritual authority.
Someone with baramei is believed to carry steadiness, protection, and a presence that naturally extends to the people and spaces around them.
WHY IT'S ON THIS SHIRT
In Khmer culture, it is common to have meaningful items blessed. It's a way of setting intention and carrying that forward.
I believe in energy and intention. What is put into something continues beyond its creation.
What is made with care carries that care forward. What is made without it carries that as well.
This piece was made with that understanding. Not only to look a certain way, but to hold something within it.
Each batch is brought together and blessed by a Buddhist monk, sealing the garments with baramei, protection, and presence.
That blessing is meant to be carried forward to the wearer, and extend to those around them.
THE DESIGN
Baramei in Khmer script runs down the spine, held between Khmer Om symbols (៚), traditionally used to close and contain the energy of a mantra, sealing what is placed between them.
SOMSAUCE sits below, sealed in the same way.
Two nagas stand alongside the script as guardians. In Khmer culture, they protect temples, knowledge, and sacred spaces. Here, they guard what the piece carries and the person wearing it.
On the front, the SS mark is a stylized SOMSAUCE initial that, when mirrored, also reads as two nagas facing outward.
Placed over the chest, it sits near the heart as a point of protection.
The same SS appears on the sleeve tag, carried through as a smaller mark, holding that same meaning across the piece.
At the hem, a stylized QR code is placed so if someone asks about the piece and its meaning, you can have them scan and explore the full context behind it.
